I'm a bit late today. That's because I decided not to write my newsletter yesterday as I normally do. I was on a roll writing the new book andΒ Β I wanted to keep bashing away on my keyboard. I get hyperfixated like that at times. Sometimes when the words are flowing, it's good not to interrupt them.
Today, I'm going to take a bit of breather from it and attend to my inbox so if you've written to me in the last couple of months, you might get a reply!
Question of the week
After finishing a book, how do you determine which book/series to tackle next?
Thanks to John P. for the question! I'm super glad he asked me this because it gives me the opportunity to lay out my new plan going forward.
In the past, the answer to this question would have been that I base my decision on a combination of the following:
- what my readers tell me they want me to write based on sales or requests via email
- my feelings about what I would like to write next
- which series haven't I added to in a while
That has resulted in a hodge-podge of erratic decisions and, occasionally, too long between books in some series.
Starting next year, I will be employing a different approach. This is what I expect to happen going forward.
- There will be one Inspector Graham per year. This will be my priority. It is my best selling series and releasing a book a year will meet the wishes of the largest number of readers.
- I will endeavour to write a book in one other series per year. Next year, that will be the final Diana as I promised when I released the last book, Broken.
Life may get in the way, of course. My life outside writing ebbs and flows as everyone's does. A spanner may enter in the works, but the above is my plan.
After I publish the new Inspector Graham I'm currently writing later in the year, I will take a break and start up again January 1, with a new Graham. I will follow that with the final Diana in late 2025.
In 2026, I expect to write a new Graham and a Roxy. What can I say? I'm a long range thinker and happen to have the next ten years publishing schedule planned. (It's written on a Post-it and stuck on my office wall.) We'll see how it goes. π
